And we wonder why public transit use has declined in Portland? Until we can restore order to our city it will be exceedingly difficult to attain a robust level of public transportation use or increase our bike share. Our elected leaders in Portland and Multnomah say we are committed to battling climate change and care for the environment but then they have allowed lawlessness and disorder to become rampant. Lots of hypocrisy here in the Rose City.
I had quit riding the trains months back when I was so lucky to have a train in front of mine one day have to “air out” for 15 minutes because of drug use. I then switched to buses.
However, this past week my usual bus was a no show, so I decided I’d take Max. Well, nothing happened, but I did notice when I got off at Gateway that there were only 5 other passengers on the whole train! This was in the early afternoon and in the past there would have been a couple dozen.
A fluke? A sign of the times? Don’t know, but until TriMet pulls its collective head out of you know where and makes the trains (and buses) SAFE they will just continue to bleed riders.
Yep. Unfortunately it’s not just Trimet that can make public transportation safe. We need an adequately staffed police department, a PBOT that enforces regulations, a functioning 911 system, a DA that prosecutes, politicians that support public safety and an end to unsanctioned camping to get people back on public transportation.
LOL. Come on, this is Portland.
