Truly frightening NextDoor post today. This cyclist and the police are true heroes! Seems very likely lives were saved and/or injuries prevented by this astute cyclist and rapid police response.
Update: According to KATU Portland Police detained this individual who said he was shooting rats to keep them out of his camp. Individual was cooperative and weapon was removed from shooter. Good example of the importance of having professional law enforcement and rapid response to 911 calls.
“Today i went for a ride on the 205 bike trail. I got onto it behind gateway fred meyers. As i exited from under the halsey street overpass i saw a man 2 feet from me with rifle and scope aimed at the cars that were slowly moving on the freeway. He had a lookout posted partway up the hill. I think they didnt see me coming because i was on my trike which is low to the ground. I was going about 20 mph at the time. I saw him, he saw me. I pedaled faster and goosed my electric assist to get down the hill and around the bend so he couldnt shoot me. Then dialed 911 and stopped people from going towards him on the bikepath. I was worried about the kids at gateway greens bike park because the shooter was just over the hill a small bit from them. My bike cam took that picture of him which i have given to police. The police came right away and later when i had gotten the picture off my camera to send to them the officer said they caught him.
It was all just a fluke that i was there at that time. I was going to go earlier then later then decided to go. Stopped several times to take pictures of blocked sidewalks to send to the city. Then decided i had best get on with my ride and punched it. It took a moment for me to realize what i saw and that he had his hand on the trigger and no time at all for me to get away as fast as i could so i could call 911 before he shot someone.
This city is broken. It is not safe anywhere.”
“ I would like to let the few people who are acting like this was nothing know that i am not making a big deal of nothing. The shooter was 2 feet from me. Rifle resting on a rock. Eye to the scope. Finger on the trigger. His Lookout half up the hill. My mind took a snapshot of it. There was the shooter 2 feet, the bike trail, maybe ten feet, the light rail tracks, and then the freeway on the other side of that with cars all doing the stop and go dance. They were not shooting rabbits. The gun was not aimed at tires. It was aimed horizontally. I will agree it looks smaller in the picture than it looked to me as i rode by. At that moment it looked like a cannon. I admit. To me this was frightening. He was aiming at cars. Someone was going to get hurt. I am thankful no one did. Next time you can be the 72 year old lady riding by the aimed rifle right next to you deciding what you are going to do about it.”
