Bike riding in Washington D.C

Last week I was had the great fortune to spend five days in our nation’s capitol. I left truly impressed with how the city is designed for bicyclists. Even major boulevards have well marked and protected bike lanes. There are numerous locations with rental bikes. We were never a long distance from a well designed Metro rails system or bike hub. It doesn’t hurt that most of the museums are government owned with free admission. I am sure my less experienced companions appreciated how flat the city is. I am definitely going back when they finish the updating of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

One major distinction I noticed in D.C. was that the heavily traveled streets were the best for bicyling. Thhe residential ones, named with letters, were so narrow they were a challenge to drive or park on. Even a brief stop by a UPS truck can stop a area for blocks.
