7 traffic deaths in last 2 weeks, Will we set a new record Portland in 2023? (Two months to go)

We still have a skeleton crew of traffic police as traffic deaths continue to pile up. Portland transportation “advocates” such as The Street Trust, Oregon Walks, Bike Loud and Sam Balto continue to remain silent on the need for a rapid restoration of traffic stops and full staffing of our traffic police. Only infrastructure improvements and traffic cameras can be discussed in the intolerant politically polarized transportation advocate echo chambers of Portland. Meanwhile the violence on our streets continue. PBOT has limited funds and our police are understaffed by 300-400 officers. Data shows traffic cameras can be racist. And drivers know there are no consequences.

I don’t care what color your skin is. If you are driving a 2 ton death machine carelessly you deserve the same treatment.

If you’re a pedestrian, your color is whatever clothes you’re wearing. Jaywalking in poor visibility while dressed all dark with no reflective features is bad for your own well being.

It’s no wonder that a high percentage of pedestrians hit and killed have been homeless. Unfortunately drug and alcohol intoxication is common in this demographic. That combined with Portland “compassion” which allows cruel street camping makes for a dangerous combination.
